Case Manager (Advocate)

Location: Nairobi, Hybrid

Reports to: Director of Legal Operations

Type: Full-time

Compensation: Commensurate with experience

Deadline for Application: Friday 17th July 2026

About Us

HK Law is not a typical law firm. We run a tech-enabled legal services group on our own platform (ZAMU), built around three revenue engines sharing one brand, one client base, and one data asset: the Practice (our own litigation, commercial, and advisory work), ZamuBriefs (a marketplace matching advocates and firms with a vetted, tiered network of briefers for court coverage), and Enforcer (a productized judgment-debt enforcement and recovery business run on milestone escrow). A fourth layer, CourtWatch & Data, connects all three by turning every court session into intelligence that makes the whole firm sharper. Matters, court sessions, documents, payments, and our AI drafting assistants all run through one system.

Why This Role Exists

The Case Manager (Advocate) is responsible for maintaining the quality, momentum, and accountability of every matter across the firm's Practice, Marketplace, and Enforcer businesses. Every file passes through this role before reaching a client or the court, making it central to the firm's quality assurance and operational excellence.

While the role is primarily focused on oversight and coordination, it is intentionally held by a practising advocate. When circumstances require, you will step into a matter, appear in court, draft documents, advise clients, and lead the file until it is stable before returning it to the normal workflow.

What You'll Do

Matter oversight (the core of the role)

  • Oversee an active caseload from intake through closure on ZAMU, keeping matter records, task plans, and milestones accurate and current at every stage.

  • Own the case-manager review gate: check work before it reaches a client or the court, across Practice matters, marketplace briefs, and enforcement files alike.

  • Review case plans proactively and flag matters that need attention before they become urgent, rather than waiting to be asked.

  • Use AI-assisted drafting and legal technology tools responsibly to improve quality and efficiency.

  • Contribute feedback to improve platform functionality and legal workflows.

Coordination & communication

  • Coordinate between advocates, briefers, clients, and court schedules, making sure the right person is assigned to the right task at the right time.

  • Communicate case status clearly and proactively to clients and internal stakeholders — our clients should never have to chase us for an update.

  • Support round-robin brief assignment and escalate no-shows or delivery issues through the marketplace's dispute workflow when needed.

  • Build trusted relationships with clients through proactive communication and professional service.

  • Ensure clients receive timely updates throughout the lifecycle of every matter.

  • Provide constructive feedback to interns, briefers and junior advocates.

  • Support quality improvement through coaching and knowledge sharing.

Deadlines, milestones & quality control

  • Track filing deadlines, hearing dates, and outstanding tasks across every matter in your caseload, using ZAMU as the single source of truth.

  • Verify milestones before escrow release on enforcement and marketplace matters, in line with our trust-money controls.

  • Leverage CourtWatch intelligence—including cause list movements, adjournment trends and court activity—to anticipate scheduling risks and support proactive matter management.

Risk Management & Continuous Improvement

  • Identify bottlenecks and recommend improvements to legal workflows.

  • Monitor recurring issues and propose process improvements.

  • Support continuous improvement of templates, workflows and AI-assisted drafting.

  • Contribute to improvements within ZAMU and legal operations processes.

Stepping in, end-to-end, when it's needed

Not routine daily work - you will:

  • Take over a matter personally and run it end-to-end — appearance, drafting, and client advice — when a briefer falls through, a matter turns urgent, or the file needs a steadier hand than reassignment alone can give it.
  • Attend court, draft pleadings, affidavits, or submissions, and advise the client directly on that matter for as long as it needs your direct involvement.

  • Hand the matter back to the normal assignment flow once it's stable, resuming your oversight role on it rather than holding onto it indefinitely.

Who We're Looking For

Required

  • Admitted Advocate of the High Court of Kenya in good standing with a valid Practising Certificate.

  • Demonstrated litigation experience and ability to manage legal matters independently.

  • Experience managing multiple legal matters simultaneously.

  • Willingness to work in a hybrid environment and attend court when required.

It'll Help If You Have

  • Experience in legal operations or case coordination.

  • Experience supervising advocates, interns or legal support staff.

  • Litigation experience across multiple court stations.

  • Exposure to legal technology or workflow automation.

You'll Thrive Here If You...

  • Are confident stepping into the courtroom when a matter requires it and are comfortable drafting to a professional standard.

  • Enjoy bringing order to complexity, managing multiple matters, deadlines and priorities without losing attention to detail.

  • Communicate with clarity and confidence, ensuring clients and colleagues are always well informed.

  • Embrace technology, learning new systems quickly and using legal technology to improve efficiency.

  • Take ownership, working independently and delivering results in a hybrid environment where performance is measured by outcomes, not hours.

  • Think ahead rather than react, identifying risks and solving problems before they affect clients or deadlines.

  • Are coachable and committed to continuous improvement, using feedback to continually improve your work.

Where This Leads

This role is ideal for candidates who demonstrate strong ownership of their caseload. High performers will be positioned to take on P&L responsibility for one of the firm's product lines (Practice, Marketplace or Enforcer) as the operating structure matures and will be considered first for Legal Operations leadership roles.

Existing HK Law briefers are encouraged to apply — this role is a natural next step in the same tier progression that runs through our briefer network.

HK Law is an equal opportunity employer. We recruit people with ownership, curiosity and the capability to help us redefine how legal services are delivered.
